The European Economic Association
Hicks-Tinbergen Award

In 1991 the EEA created a medal to be awarded once every two years (even years) to the author(s) of an outstanding article published in the Association’s Journal during the two preceding years. Until the end of 2002 this journal was the European Economic Review(EER). From January 2003 the article is chosen from the Journal of the European Economics Association (JEEA). It has been named the Hicks-Tinbergen medal to make it clear that the EEA stands for both theoretical and empirical work in economics in Europe . It was awarded for the first time in 1992 at the Dublin Congress. Members views will be solicited.

The 2010 Hicks-Tinbergen Medal was awarded to Denis Fougere, Francis Kramarz and Julien Pouget  for thier article "Youth Unemployment and Crime in France"  (published in JEEA Volume 7 Issue 5) at the 25th Congress in Glasgow on Monday August 23 2010.

Professor Christopher Pissarides, President of the EEA presented the medal before the Schumpeter Lecture, given by Professor Orazio Attanasio.

The Selection Committee stated that examines an important issue and makes a convincing case that youth unemployment affects crime in France. It sheds new light on an issue which has been controversial in the existing literature It is methodologically convincing, especially insofar as it places special care upon the measures of unemployment and tries to identify a causal relation between crime and unemployment.

The Selection Committee comprised of Fabrizio Zilibotti, Ernst Fehr and Jordi Galì
